Scary Josh and Ucky Feelings
March 11th, 2008 Kai StarrUrgggg…I’m really feeling weird, lately. I don’t know if it’s the cold/hot/cold/wet/dry/uck weather we’ve been having down here in the Lone Star state or what, but my head is allllll funky inside. Weird. Whatever it is, I’ll be glad when the crap is over. Maybe I just need some serious chocolate! Fortunately, I have some! Woohoo! \(^o^)/
Oh yeah…I have been working on a new pic of Joshua Love, from the Desperado Western series, though this pic is from the last novel in that series, Whirlwind. It’s still unfinished, and takes place in 1876, some six years after Rustler’s Roundup, but poor Josh is about completely off his nut, by that point. I think you can see it in this pic! He’s 22 or 23 years old, here:

He wants his gun in this pic, and I’m a little afraid to give it to him. He might shoot me, though he promises he won’t. :P I’ll post the finished version, once it’s done.
That said, how are you guys liking the Desperado series? Sign up for this blog and let me know, or shoot me an email at Kai at KaiStarr.com. I’d love to hear your thoughts, good or bad! I’ve received some great emails and kind comments in AIM and elsewhere, so if you have thoughts you’d like to share, please don’t be shy! I don’t bite. Much. :P
Oh, last thing before the updates: Would you all like a shoutbox on this front page? On all the pages? At all? I had one on my Comics site that I had to take down because that old host funked it up, but it seemed to work out well for a time. Again, tell me what you want and I’ll do my best to put it together!
For today’s updates, in Rustler’s Roundup, Joshua gets macho in the Alhambra Saloon, and then gets something unexpected from Jenny!
Today’s Updates:
Rustler’s Roundup, chapter 31 (Desperado novel)

Well, you know I LOVE Desperado and LOVE Joshua! He’s so cute and silly…but that new pic IS scary. I like your westerns because you put so much research into them and it’s not all full of supernatural junk and insipid giggly-girly crap. It’s real people and real places and stuff that could really happen. That appeals to me! I think some people probably won’t get into the story just because it’s not all full of stupid unrealistic action, magic and sex. But that’s what I LIKE about it so don’t change it!! It’s much harder to write the way you do, keeping everything within the realm of actual possibility than to throw magic in to god-mode everything so that you can have all kinds of retarded things that couldn’t happen in real life happen. Kudos to you, Kai, for keeping it REAL.

Thanks, Kimi! I do try to keep things as realistic as I can. I don’t like to give my characters supernatural powers, because I want them to have to figure out their problems–or fail to figure them out–on their own, without magical help. It forces them to be more creative in how they try to solve their problems!
On the other side of the token, when I write fantasy or supernatural stories, I like to put those powerful characters into situations where their powers can’t help them, and in fact, may even hinder or endanger them. That’s just much more fun, to me, than letting them have “outs” when the going gets tough. Stories that give the characters outs aren’t very deep, usually.
